Nintendo to boost Wii & DS software sales

Games firm targets 300 million Wii & DS titles

Nintendo said that it plans to double annual software sales for titles that play on its Wii and DS consoles to 300 million units.

No specific deadline was given for the increase, although the company said it aims to more than double its Wii hardware sales from 5.84 million to 14 million units in the current business year.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata told an Osaka news conference, “As a mid-term target it would be appropriate for us to establish a market in which we can sell about 300 million units of DS and Wii software.”

After the company underestimated the demand for the Wii, Iwata says he plans to tackle shortages of the console by boosting production.

Nintendo has said that, due to increasing demand, its DS is seeing the highest production ever for a Nintendo console at 2.5 million machines a month.
