PS3 campsite set up at Virgin

Virgin aims to deliver “best console launch ever”

The Oxford Street branch of Virgin Megastores will allow fans to camp out from midday today to secure their copy of the Sony PlayStation 3 console.

HMV and Game have both cancelled the midnight openings of their stores due to police safety concerns and will now open early in the morning on the 23 March.

But Virgin Megastores is going one step further and has been selected by Sony as the official UK retail partner for the launch of the PS3. The ground floor of the store will be converted into gamers camping site. Food and entertainment will be laid on in the store. The launch will also include official PS3 merchandise and incentives to the first customers to collect their PS3s from the store at midnight Thursday 22 March.

Stephen Lynn, senior PR and promotions manager, said Virgin is very excited to be able to offer its customers the “complete Sony experience at launch”.

“Needless to say the experience and safety of our customers will come first and it will be an amazing launch,” he added. The company says it has been working with local authorities to deliver the “best console launch ever”.
