CeBIT: PS3 to drive high-def movies

One week to go for UK PS3 release

Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3) is already having an impact on demand for the Blu-ray disc next-generation DVD format, according to a spokesperson for the company.

Nick Sharples, director of corporate communications at Sony UK, said 50 percent of console fans who've pre-ordered the PS3 have also ordered a Blu-ray movie. “Blu-ray is absolutely fundamental to the positioning of the PS3. It's one of the reasons why the console will be placed in people's living rooms, rather than in bedrooms and studies,” he said.

The PS3 will be released in the UK one week today, and Sharples said 130 Blu-ray titles would be available at launch. He also revealed that the first 500,000 PS3 buyers who sign up to the PlayStation Network will receive a free copy of the latest James Bond movie, Casino Royale.
