World of Warcraft update breaks record

3.5m WoW expansion packs sold in a month

The Burning Crusade, an extension pack for the online role-playing game World of Warcraft (WOW), has sold more than 3.5 million copies since its launch in January this year. This figure includes nearly 1.6 million sold in Europe.

Blizzard Entertainment had previously announced that its expansion set, The Burning Crusade, had sold nearly 2.4 million copies worldwide in its first 24 hours, which is more than any PC game had sold in a month of availability. Amazon.com also reported that it received more pre-orders for the expansion pack than any PC or console game ever. The subscriber base for WOW has also grown to exceed 8.5 million.

Mike Morhaime, president of Blizzard Entertainment, said the company has worked hard to build upon nearly every aspect of WOW with the expansion and it is “gratifying to see that players are enjoying the new content”.
