UK Wii sales topped 200,000 at Christmas

Nintendo's console tops sales charts in UK

Nintendo is celebrating after more than 200,000 Wii consoles were sold in the UK alone over the Christmas period.

The figures released by research firm, Chart Track, show that the total number of Wii consoles sold in Europe during December exceeded 700,000. Nintendo had further reason to celebrate, with the Wii and DS accounting for over half of the video games sold in December.

After the console’s European launch on 8 December it was named the fastest selling Wii ever in Europe, selling out in a matter of days. Software for the console flew off the shelves, with Wii Play selling 320,000 copies to date and 500,000 copies of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess being bought in December. Following such huge success Nintendo has increased its projected financial performance for the year to be the best in company history.

Marketing director, Laurent Fischer, commented on the Wii’s sales figures, saying it demonstrated "Nintendo's drive to make gaming accessible to everyone". He revealed there are still stock shortages for both the Wii and the DS in the UK.
