Nintendo DS is top US console

Handheld console tops US sales list in 2006

The Nintendo DS outsold the Wii and PlayStation 3 (PS3) in the recent holiday period, and was also the top-selling gaming device during 2006, according to US figures from NPD Group.

The report shows a strong launch for the Wii, with 604,200 consoles sold in December alone and a total of 1.1 million shipping since its launch.

The Nintendo DS, meanwhile, achieved 1.6 million sales in December and 9.2 million to date. Sony’s PS3 did not do quite as well, selling only 490,700 units in December. However this can be attributed to shortages in supply due to problems with production.

Sales figures for the Wii games were also high and on average, Wii owners purchased three extra titles, with 86 percent of them buying The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.

Following the successful launch of the Wii and strong sales for the DS, Nintendo’s projected worldwide financial performance for the year ending 31 March is set to be the best in the company history.
