Valve SteamOS beta hardware Machine Controller

Valve has announced its SteamOS will launch tomorrow with Steam Machines and Controllers being shipped.

For the 300 selected beta testers Christmas is coming early because a shiny new Steam Machine and Controller is about to be shipped. The highly anticipated SteamOS is about to hit testing with prototype hardware being sent out tomorrow, 13 December.

Valve said: "The time has come! We are ready to begin shipping Steam Machines and Steam Controllers to the 300 selected beta participants. The machines are due to leave the factory on Friday!"

For now, only the US-based beta testers will get their hands on the Steam gear along with a special badge on their Steam Community profile. See also: Why SteamOS will challenge Windows for PC gaming supremacy.

For the rest of us aching to try out the SteamOS system, Valve has said Steam Machines will be available in 2014 with more info to be shared at CES on 6 January. SteamOS will be available to download by individual users commercial OEMs but there's a warning.

"unless you’re an intrepid Linux hacker already, we’re going to recommend that you wait until later in 2014 to try it out." said Valve.

Valve will be up against the big guns with Steam OS including the Sony PS4 and Xbox One. Microsoft announced yesterday that it has reached the sales milestone of two million devices.

The Xbox One hit the figure after 18 days on sale in 13 markets around the world. It launched a few days before its PlayStation rival. Microsoft also said gamers have already racked up 83 million hours of game, TV and apps; 39 million achievements unlocked and 595 million Gamerscore achieved.

Amazon saw, at peak demand, more than 1,000 orders per minute for the Xbox One.
