Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time will not arrive on time

PopCap Games will delay the release of iOS of the sequel to the beloved flower defense game Plants vs. Zombies.

Plants vs. Zombies fans, put down your trowels.

The upcoming PvZ sequel, Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time, will not be available at the iOS store on July 18 after all. According to a tweet from the official @PlantsvsZombies Twitter account on Wednesday, the game has been delayed.

The iOS sequel brings back many favorite elements of the original PvZ tower defense (or as PopCap says, "flower defense") game, including known plant species and saucepan-hatted neighbor Crazy Dave.

No longer restricted to his roles as gameplay advisor and twiddydinkies vendor, Crazy Dave has turned his special kind of genius to building a time machine. With it, Crazy Dave whisks you through time and space to locations such as Ancient Egypt, the future, and The Wild West. This trailer, released in early June, shows several new varieties of plants.

PopCap's Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time page also displays two short videos with snippets of actual gameplay, including the scowling, pugilistic Bonk Choy. Garth Chouteau, PopCap's senior director of worldwide public relations, says to watch that space for "several more of those transmissions from the past."

Gameplay has grown beyond the original, says Chouteau. The new settings include twists  such as moving trains in the Wild West and a piratical parrot that flies off a zombie's shoulder and dives like the first game's bungee zombies.

Plants vs. Zombies 2 will be free to play, but you can buy power-ups and early plant acquistion. However, there are still plenty of PvZ games to keep you busy until PvZ2 comes to fruition.

You can still play Plants vs. Zombies on Android, iOS, Mac, and PC, plus the newer, cuter Plants vs. Zombies Adventures on Facebook.

For those of us who've already played them all, there's still a rich field of gardening metaphors and bad puns ready for harvest. Without those, the wait would be a hard row to hoe.
