Microsoft changes mind on Xbox One internet and DRM

Microsoft caves in on Xbox One criticisms

Microsoft Xbox One console

Microsoft has done a U-turn on the Xbox One needing an internet connection and its sharing games policy. See also: PS4 vs Xbox One console comparison review.

After a public and media frenzy, Microsoft has caved into pressure to change key aspects of its Xbox One console. The firm was criticised for the Xbox One requiring an internet connection to be able to play games and not letting users share and trade games – especially since the Sony PS4 did not come with these restrictions.

New Xbox One release date, features, UK price and specs.

Don Mattrick, President, Interactive Entertainment Business at Xbox said: "An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games – After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again."

This means there is no longer a once every 24 hours authentication requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want.

"Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today – There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360." he added.
Games downloaded from Xbox Live will also be playable offline, plus there will be no regional restrictions.

"We appreciate your passion, support and willingness to challenge the assumptions of digital licensing and connectivity. While we believe that the majority of people will play games online and access the cloud for both games and entertainment, we will give consumers the choice of both physical and digital content. We have listened and we have heard loud and clear from your feedback that you want the best of both worlds." concluded Mattrick.

Perhaps we should all complain about the price of the Xbox One being higher than the PS4 and see what happens – consumer power.
