Microsoft will show off next Xbox console before E3

Xbox 720 reveal

Microsoft has announced that it will reveal the next Xbox console, thought to be the Xbox 720, on 21 May. See also: Microsoft launches Xbox One - as it happened, details.

The next generation of Xbox console will be unveiled by Microsoft on 21 May, it has confirmed. The event will take place at the Xbox campus in Redmond and will be hosted by Don Mattrick, Microsoft's president of interactive entertainment business. See also: Xbox 720 specifications revealed.

"On Tuesday May 21, we'll mark the beginning of a new generation of games, TV and entertainment." said Larry Hyrb, aka Major Nelson, director of programming at Xbox, on a blog post named '#XboxReveal'. "On that day, we’ll share our vision for Xbox, and give you a real taste of the future."

The Xbox unveiling will be broadcast live on Xbox Live and Xbox.com so you can see the action as it unfolds. It will take place at 6pm UK time and users in the US and Canada can also catch the stream on Spike TV.

Major Nelson also said that the firm will showcase its 'full lineup' of 'blockbuster games' at the E3 gaming convention in Los Angeles just 19 days later.

Comments on Major Nelson's blog show that existing gamers are crying out for features including backwards compatibility, the ability to play used games and for the console not to require an internet connection to play. See also: Xbox 720 will be always online and block second hand games.

The Xbox reveal comes three months after Sony announced its PlayStation 4 but the firm failed to actually show what the console looked like, instead just giving gamers a look at the controller.
