The Call of Duty Championship has kicked off in US, where 32 of the most skilled Call of Duty: Black Ops II multiplayer teams have gathered in Hollywood.
The skill and dedication of Call of Duty's best eSports athletes from around the world will be put to the test for a share of a US$1 million total prize purse.
The event begins with round-robin style pool play among eight groups of four teams, where the top two teams from each group will advance to a 16-team double elimination bracket.
Activision is live streaming minute-by-minute coverage of the Call of Duty Championship via the Xbox Live dashboard in participating regions, on Xbox.com, Call of Duty Elite and the Call of Duty Facebook page, GameSpot, Twitch.tv, and other destinations.
Activision Publishing CEO, Eric Hirshberg, said the Call of Duty player community is being brought together through the popular eSports movement.
"It's a celebration of Call of Duty and a recognition of the franchise's most dedicated, talented players," he said.
"This is a great moment for the franchise, but also for eSports as a whole, which is only going to get bigger and better moving forward."
Confirmed participants at the event include InFiDream from Asia, Epsilion.IRL from Ireland and Made in Brazil... from Brazil, as well as teams from North America such as as OpTic Gaming and Fariko.Impact.
Treyarch studio head, Mark Lamia, said the developer of Call of Duty: Black Ops II could "not be more thrilled" to offer a truly international stage for people to experience the game's competitive play.
"The [event] generated a tidal wave of interest of competitive play in Black Ops II, and is the continuing realisation of the studio's eSports initiative for Call of Duty," he said
"Whether it was through qualifying from within the game during our Season 3 of Leagues, or the other organized tournaments held throughout the world, we've seen and qualified the best of the best to compete at the Championship."
The competition will culminate in a live streamed final match.
