Quickflix hits Xbox 360

Subscription video streaming service Quickflix has released an app for Microsoft's Xbox 360, letting owners of the popular games console watch unlimited movies and TV shows for a flat monthly fee.

Enterprise Buyer's Guide to Tablets

Australian and New Zealand Xbox 360 owners are now able to access the Quickflix service on their devices; the Xbox joins a host of other Internet-connected products like Samsung, Panasonic and Sony Smart TVs, Android and iOS smartphones and tablets, the Sony PlayStation 3, and PC and Mac through a Web browser, in being able to access Quickflix.

While the US Xbox Live service can access Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Amazon Instant Video, Quickflix is the only movie streaming service available locally. It joins ABC iView and SBS On Demand in offering Australian video.

As is standard for most online services on the console, viewing Quickflix on the Xbox 360 requires an Xbox Live Gold account subscription. Quickflix subscribers can access the one account with up to three devices simultaneously, viewing up to three different shows at the same time one the three devices.

At a speech during the CeBIT conference in Sydney in October, Quickflix CIO Tim Parsons told Computerworld that the company wanted to offer its streaming service on a wide variety of devices and markets to ward off possible incursions from international competitors: "We're trying to move as fast as we can because we're scared of these other big competitors and we're scared of people like [the US company] Netflix ... who might be coming to Australia.

"We want to make sure that when they turn up they realise we're in all the key devices in the premium positions--contractually agreed with those device manufacturers--and have all the different pieces in place like PCI compliance ... so they say, 'That's not really worth it.'"
