A Day in the Woods: Red Riding Hood and Puzzles

A Day in the Woods is a new puzzle game from Retro Epic, an independent development team based in South Africa. The company offers a wide variety of graphic and design services to other developers, but that doesn't mean the team doesn't have time to develop a few of its own projects on the side to keep its skills sharp.

A Day in the Woods is the latest of these, offering a series of 60 head-scratching puzzles based on a Red Riding Hood theme. Taking on the role of a sparkling sprite, it's up to the player to guide Red Riding Hood home by swapping hexagonal-shaped tiles around to create as efficient a route as possible. Bears, spiders and wolves attempt to block her path, but other characters such as the woodcutter sometimes show up to help her out with special abilities.

It's an interesting take on the usually infuriating sliding block puzzle genre, and is delivered with some pleasingly charming "woodcut" style graphics, giving the whole thing the aesthetic of a European board game. There's a 16 level demo to try out for free on Windows or OS X, and the full version is only $4.99.
