Xbox Live Coming to PC with Windows 8

Speaking via his blog, Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb announced yesterday that Windows 8 would incorporate Xbox Live functionality. Clumsily dubbed "Xbox Live on Windows," the service promises to "bring your games, music, movies and TV shows to your favorite Microsoft and Windows devices" and seems to be an attempt to forget that Games for Windows Live ever existed -- or at least a rebrand.

"Bringing Xbox Live to Windows 8 is part of our vision to bring you all the entertainment you want, shared with the people you care about, made easy," wrote Hryb. At Microsoft's Build event, currently running in Anaheim, California, Microsoft will be demonstrating how the service works and showing Windows 8 game developers how to build titles that take advantage of Xbox Live.

Specific information on exactly how Xbox Live will integrate with Windows 8 hasn't yet been shared. The big questions yet to be answered include whether or not the integration of Xbox Live means Windows support for Xbox Live Arcade games and other Marketplace content such as Zune videos. Details on that will have to wait until the "near future," however.

In the meantime, if you want to find out more about Windows 8 in general, you can watch yesterday's keynote online.
