Publishing giant EA and the developer behind The Darkness, Starbreeze Studios, have officially confirmed the existence of a Syndicate reboot in the form of a first-person shooter. It's set to hit Xbox 360, PS3 and PC early next year.
For the uninitiated, 1993's Syndicate and its 1996 sequel Syndicate Wars were cyberpunk-themed action-strategy titles originally developed by Peter Molyneux's pre-Lionhead studio Bullfrog. The combination of real-time tactics, upgradeable agents and extreme violence made them standout titles in their original era.
The new game puts players in the shoes of Miles Kilo, a prototype agent working for Eurocorp in the year 2069. Despite the change in game genre from the real-time strategy of the originals, Starbreeze and EA believe that those who played and loved Bullfrog's classics will find a lot to like in the reboot.
"Fans of the franchise will recognize many weapons and environments in the game, but in a whole new way," said Jeff Gamon, EA Partners Executive Producer. "The game also provides a separate and deep 4 player co-op mode featuring missions from the original cult classic, which adds another layer of depth to the overall experience."
"It's been a great experience working with EA," added Mikael Nermark, CEO of developer Starbreeze, "and an amazing opportunity for us to use our expertise in the first person shooter and action genres to bring back, and reignite, the signature action/espionage gameplay of Syndicate."
There's more than a touch of Deus Ex-style action to the cyberpunk shooter gameplay, as agents are able to upgrade their cybernetic skills to gain the ability to slow down time, hack into the digital world and adopt all manner of unconventional combat approaches. While it may not quite be the Syndicate older gamers know and love, it certainly sounds like EA and Starbreeze are keen to capture the oppressive Blade Runner-esque atmosphere if nothing else.
Syndicate will release on 360, PS3 and PC in early 2012.
