Square Enix Responds to Deus Ex's 'Racist' Accusations

Players have voiced concern over the portrayal of some characters in Deus Ex: Human Revolution. The publisher has responded.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is an excellent game marred by a few flaws -- mainly its anachronistic boss fights. Check out our review to find out what Tom thought of it.

But for some people, old-school pattern-based bosses are the least of their concerns with Human Revolution -- it seems one NPC in particular, known as Letitia the Trash Lady (seen in the video here), has been upsetting some people due to her depiction as speaking with what is referred to by some as slave-era dialect.

GamesRadar contacted Square Enix regarding player objections to the depiction of Letitia, and this was the company line:

"Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a fictional story which reflects the diversity of the world's future population by featuring characters of various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. While these characters are meant to portray people living in the year 2027, it has never been our intention to represent any particular ethnic group in a negative light."
