UK Rock Band Bracing for a Fight with Ubisoft

Ubisoft's Rocksmith, the self-professed "real guitar game," was announced back in March, but it seems the publisher was unaware of an unsigned band from Southend in the UK who shared the upcoming game's name.

Rocksmith the band first registered its name back in 2003, with its current UK-based lineup formed in 2007. Since that time, the group has been gigging around the UK and Europe and is currently preparing to release its album Slaying the Dragons on iTunes.

Band founder Kris Ford found out about Ubisoft's plans to release the game back in July, when a chance remark made the musician aware of the name clash.

"Once I did some online searching to verify and found out it wasn't out yet I was relieved," Ford told GamePro. "I wrote to Ubisoft suggesting that we team up -- it would be good for both of us and we could do live shows to promote their product. Ubisoft ignored me despite several approaches."

Ubisoft is currently in the process of filing for trademark on the name "Rocksmith" in the U.S. and Europe. Ford was told that if he was to oppose the application, it would have to be done by August 16. He has done so at personal expense.

"It turns out that Ubisoft are not strangers to the courts over such issues and I suspect their stonewalling was to get them to August 16 unchallenged," added Ford. "They also have applications pending in the U.S. and I will be challenging them also when the time is right."

Rocksmith the game is set for an October 11 release. We've contacted Ubisoft for comment on the issue but as yet haven't heard anything from the publisher.
