GDC to Showcase Indie and Emerging Developers

The organizers of the Game Developers Conference range of events have announced a new initiative known as GDC Play. Designed to give independent and emerging developers the opportunity to showcase their titles to investors and publishers, the program provides indies with a great low-cost opportunity to show off their work to people with deeper pockets than them.

The program will kick off with a small trial at this October's GDC Online conference in Austin, Texas. At next March's GDC in San Francisco, the program will begin in full force with separate pavilions at the conference for online and social, smartphone and tablet, and independent computer and console games. It will hopefully provide small-scale developers with the opportunity to secure some much-needed funding from publishers and investors in order to keep their projects -- current and future -- afloat.

"GDC Play is a great opportunity for small developers to show their games to a singularly qualified audience through an easy, low-cost entry," said Meggan Scavio, general manager of GDC events. "And similar to the IGF Pavilion at GDC, we expect this new, playable game area to be quite the draw and catalyst for business."
