Valve Making F2P Game

Following the news that Valve has launched a free to play section on Steam, it seems the company is planning on making its own entry into the increasingly-crowded microtransaction-based marketplace.

According to French website Barre de Vie, Valve spokesperson Doug Lombardi simply replied "yes" when asked if the company had its own free to play projects under development, but wouldn't give any further details.

Speculation is rife as to what the project might be. The most likely is that the upcoming Dota 2 will be released under this business model. After all, League of Legends, a game heavily inspired by the original Defense of the Ancients -- itself a free mod for Warcraft III -- has done pretty well under a free to play model.

Then there's Valve's own Alien Swarm, essentially a top-down sci-fi Left 4 Dead which is currently completely free, albeit a little limited owing to only having a single campaign on offer. Could this game be getting a sequel, or perhaps an update allowing further campaigns and features to be added via microtransaction?

We don't know yet, but be sure to keep an eye on Valve in the coming months, as the addition of AVA, Forsaken Worlds, Champions Online: Free for All and Spiral Knights to the Steam store as free to play titles is likely just the beginning.
