First Modern Warfare 3 Info

A number of sources have leaked a wealth of details about this year's Call of Duty game, which still hasn't been officially confirmed by Activision.

Kotaku got the scoop on Modern Warfare 3 earlier, with a number of sources which the outlet went to "great lengths to nail down as much as possible the veracity of" providing a huge amount of information about the new game.

Here's what is apparently known so far, then:

The game opens after the cliffhanger ending of Modern Warfare 2 and, as usual for the last few Call of Duty games, will cast players in a variety of roles in different locations around the world. Player characters mentioned so far included a Russian Federal Protective Services agent, an SAS operative, a tank funner and an AC-130 gunner as well as "key characters from previous instalments and new recurring characters."

The game will apparently feature "about" 15 missions, starting with a Russian invasion of Manhattan and concluding with a final battle in Dubai. Said missions are tipped to follow Infinity Ward's trend of short, spectacular set-pieces with quick scene changes. There will also be vehicle sections, including a flight in an AC-130 gunship and a ride in a tank.

The single player campaign promises to "wrap up most of the unanswered questions and character fates of the first two Modern Warfare titles" and also introduces a number of new characters who are expected to become recurring cast members in future titles. Specifically, two Delta Force operatives named "Frost" and "Sandman" are highlighted.

SEAL Team Six, the unit assumed to have killed Osama Bin Laden, is mentioned throughout, though none of the mission summaries provided to Kotaku seem to feature the team directly.

The multiplayer mode -- which is, let's face it, what most Call of Duty fans really care about -- features two types of Spec Ops modes, dubbed "Survival" and "Mission" alongside the usual list of matchmaking playlists. Sources told Kotaku that there will be up to 20 multiplayer maps, though they weren't sure how many would be included in the game and how many would held back for future DLC packs. Maps include numerous real-world locations, many of which are seen in the campaign, including Brooklyn, Lambeth (an area of London), the London Underground and Mogadishu.

The final piece of leaked information indicates that we can expect the new game to release on November 8 2011, which would fit in with Call of Duty's past release schedule.

None of this has been confirmed by Activision as yet, but the volume of information and the quality of the assets provided to Kotaku certainly looks pretty convincing.
