EA Buying Firemint

EA is making further efforts to dominate the mobile space with the acquisition of highly-regarded developer Firemint for an undisclosed sum.

Develop reports that a buyout of Australian smartphone games specialist Firemint by EA will be completed "in a matter of weeks" and that the deal is "not material."

EA claims that the acquisition of Firemint, who are behind such popular titles as Flight Control and the Real Racing series, will "fuel its leadership" in the mobile space. Firemint is known for building "high-end" mobile titles which are designed to provide console-like experiences on smartphones and tablets rather than the more typical simplistic mobile games. Real Racing 2, for example, apparently had a budget of well over $2 million.

EA's publishing might -- along with their willingness to heavily discount their titles around holiday periods -- coupled with Firemint's technical knowhow will create a formidable partnership in mobile gaming.
