Report: Nintendo Announcing New Console at E3

Nintendo is rumored to be shopping a new high-definition console with publishers. Will it be officially announced at E3?

Nintendo will be revealing a new console at E3, Game Informer is reporting. "Multiple sources" confirm that it will be able to play games in high-definition, and that Nintendo is currently showing it off to publishers.

"Nintendo is doing this one right," an anonymous source reportedly said. "[It's] not a gimmick like the Wii."

That could potentially mark a departure from the "blue ocean" strategy that has characterized Nintendo over the years, though it's not a given that they are abandoning motion controls. At this time, it's not even clear what the systems controls or specs might be.

Word of a new Nintendo console has been swirling around industry circles for more than a year now, though there has been no hard evidence as of yet. With the Wii nearing its fifth anniversary and sales declining though, the time seems ripe for a hardware refresh.

We've contacted Nintendo representatives for comment, and we'll let you know when we have more to report. Regardless, we wouldn't be surprised to see a new console get unveiled at E3 in June.
