73% of mobile phone owners play games on their handset

A quarter are 'avid mobile gamers'

Nearly three quarters (73 percent) of Brits with mobile phones have played a game on their handset, says PopCap.

Research by the gaming website revealed a third of respondents had played a game on their mobile phone within the past month, while a quarter were "avid mobile gamers" has they had played a game on their handset within a week of the research taking place.

Furthermore of those that play games on their mobile phone, half said the amount of time spent playing games has increased over the past year and 78 percent admitted playing mobile phone games has become a regular part of their week's activities.

More than two in five (43 percent) of mobile phone gamers claimed to have upgraded for a free game to a paid-for version in the past year and on average 23 percent of all mobile phone usage time is spent playing games.

"Mobile games are, along with social games, the hottest sector of the video game industry by far," said Dennis Ryan from PopCap.

"As more people purchase smartphones and the entire process of finding, purchasing and playing mobile games becomes as simple as browsing the internet, the mobile games market is going to accelerate even more."
