The top 10 games of November 2010

November game sales rankings

As expected,  Call of Duty: Black Ops ruled the sales charts for November 2010. However, the game's level of domination was revealed even further in the monthly sales results from the NPD Group.

The NPD Group has revealed the top selling hardware and software at retail for one of the biggest retail months of the year-November. As expected, Call of Duty: Black Ops took the top spot, but the NPD pulled out a few more mind blowing statistics regarding Activision's juggernaut. For example, did you know Black Ops accounted for a quarter of ALL sales last month? The NPD also stated that the 8.5 million copies of Black Ops sold makes it the 7th best-selling game of all time. And by "all time," I'm pretty sure they mean "since 1995. "

Other new-release success stories include Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, which debuted at second, and Gran Turismo 5, which almost felled Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit despite coming out ten days later and on three fewer consoles. Despite the fact that the system may not be the monthly sales force it was for its first three years on the market (more on that below), the Wii had three exclusives on the list, including the monthly "how is this still selling?" mainstay, Wii Fit Plus. Here's the top 10 ranking IPs for November 2010.

1) Call of Duty: Black Ops (360, PS3, Wii, PC, DS - Released 11/09/10)

2) Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood (360, PS3- Released 11/16/10)

3) Just Dance 2 (Wii- Released 10/12/10)

4) Madden NFL 11 (360, PS3, Wii, PS2, PSP- Released 08/10/10)

5) Fable III (360 - Released 10/26/10)

6) Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii- Released 11/21/10)

7) Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (PS3, 360, Wii, PC- Released 11/16/10))

8) Gran Turismo 5 (PS3 - Released 11/24/10)

9) NBA 2K11 (360, PS3, Wii, PS2, PSP,PC - Released10/05/10)

10) Wii Fit Plus (Wii- Released 10/04/09)

On the hardware end, the top selling home console for November was the Xbox 360, driven in large part by the debut of Kinect. Microsoft's new motion-sensing peripheral became the top selling accessory of 2010 in less than a month and helped the company carry 60% of the accessory market in November . The Nintendo DS was the top selling system overall, due in large part to the introduction of the limited edition red handheld released to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Super Mario Bros.

The NPD stated that November 2010 was the best November the service has on record in terms of sales numbers, and that most platforms saw much greater grown from October 2010 to November 2010 than they did in 2009, largely due to more aggressive Black Friday sales.
