Study: 60% of female players don't call themselves 'gamers'

'An activity, not an identity'

Casual game publisher PlayFirst and market research firm Frank N. Magid Associates, Inc. weigh in on the casual games market spread across social network, mobile, and PC platforms. Not surprisingly, gender plays a role.

Some factoids from the study include:

  • 14 percent of all players game on all three platforms.
  • Facebook players are more likely to be 18- to 34-year-old women.
  • iPhone players are more likely to be 18- to 34-year-old men.
  • Almost 60% of female players don't identify themselves as "gamers."

That last point is interesting to the study conductors because they see it as a lifestyle question, citing games as "an activity rather than part of their identity." It could also be a problem with the word "gamer," however, as many definitions exist to define the term (and some of them are not so flattering).
