Gamers won't need glasses to get 3D effect

Nintendo is planning to release a handheld games console later this year which offers 3D graphics without the need for special glasses.

The Nintendo 3DS will be announced at the E3 Expo, which will take place in the US in June. The console is expected to hit shelves some time before March 2011.

Nintendo said the device will be backwards compatible with games released for its hugely popular DS and DSi handheld gaming consoles.

Nintendo has already released a glasses-free game for the DSi in Japan that offers 3D graphics. The game works with the console's built-in camera to track a user's head movements.

However, Nintendo has yet to confirm whether the 3DS console will use this technology.
