A PlayStation 3 (PS3) firmware update (version 2.36) has introduced in-game access to the PS3 menu together with Xbox-style achievements called 'Trophies'.
The announcement comes by way of the official PlayStation blog, in which Eric Lempel, director of PSN, said the update would be "launching soon".
PS3 owners have previously criticised the absence of in-game access to the PlayStation menu, also called the Cross Media Bar or XMB for short. Both the Xbox 360 and, to a lesser extent, Nintendo Wii, offer full or partial access to their respective menus at any time during gameplay.
Regarding the Trophies announcement, Lempel described them as an "exciting new feature that we'll be providing more details on soon".

Kev said: We have been waiting ages for this but editors should note no date has been given for firmware 236 let alone 24 which include the in-game XMB and trophies This bodes badly for Home such a large application would be beyond 24x firmware and would likely be out in 25 or later still
