Final Fantasy XIII 'won't ship in 2008'

Square Enix quashes rumours of early release

Final Fantasy XIII developer Square Enix has moved to dampen down rumours that the next iteration of the Final Fantasy series will be released this year.

The Japanese video game company, also home to the Dragon Quest and kingdom Hearts series, said yesterday: "Although information regarding the release date of Final Fantasy XIII has been reported by certain videogame websites, Square Enix itself has yet to make an official statement on this topic.

"Any reports of a confirmed release date are erroneous and should be disregarded. Square Enix will make an official announcement in the future concerning the release date when it has been determined."

Reports of a 2008 released date surfaced early this week when suggestive comments made by Square Enix director Motomu Toriyama were interpreted as confirming launch for later this year.

In actuality, Toriyama implied only a playable demo of Final Fantasy XIII.
