Sony gets aggressive with PS3 sales target

PlayStation 3 is "starting afresh" says exec

Sony hopes to sell 11m PlayStation 3 (PS3) consoles by April 1 2008, claiming a recent US price drop in November has helped shipments triple.

The PS3 outsold the Nintendo Wii for the first time in Japan last month and sold an impressive 466,000 units in the US during the Thanksgiving holiday rush.

With current PS3 sales at an estimated 7 million units worldwide, Sony will have to move 1 million units per month through to March 31 to hit its target.

"[PS3] is starting afresh as a console to play games with," Sony’s Kaz Hirai told the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper. "Although pricing strategy is important, now we would like to put our strength in the number of software games."
