Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3) will catch up with the Nintendo Wii in sales by 2011, according to analyst Piers Harding-Rolls.
Harding-Rolls told the Economist the PS3 sales surge will be based on the console's recent price cut and the availability of more PS3 games next year.
Despite its current lead over the PS3, Xbox 360 sales are expected to slow in coming years according to Screen Digest. The researcher predicts that both Wii and PS3 worldwide unit sales will double that of Xbox 360 by 2011.
Nintendo's currently leads this generation of consoles with an installed base 15.8 million units worldwide, followed by the Xbox 360 with 14.3 million, and the PS3 at 6.9 million, according to VG Chartz.

Zaid Khalil said: BillYou are absolutely correct One of the big revolutionary changes with the Wii is that it was built on yesterdays hardware Hence Nintendo can sell every unit at a profit This allows Nintendo to redefine the whole concept of the console cycle That gaming analysts in equity research dont understand this is not a surprise to me having had exposure to the field these guys are little more than sales reps and are generally clueless when it comes to practically anything especially finance

Bill said: ps2 has sold like 115m consoles over the past 8 yearsBUT majority of people who bought it was because of the dvd player not for the games as dvd was pretty new and cost around in the hundreds back then They were casual gamers buying movies to watch on their non-hd sets not for the games The biggest selling games on the ps2 are less than 10 of the total install base of the ps2 - a significant number around 1 to 3 The problem with the ps3 is people will have to fork out for a hd tv set ps3and most families wont until their tvs pack it in and most casual gamers are happy with dvd quality still and hd tv channels isnt in the affordable range for working class families - vast majority you have to pay a fee towatch anyway
Bill said: By the time 2011 comes around there will be a hd console being released by nintendo Wii has been marketed by for casual market as well as the older generation -not the hardcore markethardcore gamers will buy a wii anyway Another problem is that their are two hd formats in bluray and hd dvd Where thre wasnt one with just dvd
