Sony plans new £70 PlayStation 2

Cheap & lightweight PS2 launching in Japan

Sony is to sell a new, lighter version of the PS2 (PlayStation 2) in Japan on 22 November.

The newly designed PS2 will cost 16,000 yen (£70) and features a sold separately stand like the original PS2 stand for $4 (£2).

"While inheriting the functions of the current PlayStation 2, the internal design architecture of the new system has been completely overhauled, resulting (in a console that is) lighter in weight," the company said.

While expected, a US announcement has yet to be made. There’s no word on whether European games fans can expect to see the budget PS2, however.
