Nintendo Wiimote gets cushioned cover

Wii jackets will cost Nintendo $17 million

Nintendo has launched Wii Remote Jackets, silicone covers for the Wii Remote.

The rubbery silicone remote covers are designed to provide a cushioning effect if the Wii Remote hits other players or gets dropped during game play. The Wii Remote Jacket is expected to be available to buy from mid October.

Despite the added protection of the silicone cover, Nintendo still advises caution when playing with the Wii. "Use of the Wii Remote Jacket is meant to supplement, not replace, the basic game play instructions: keep a firm grip, don’t let go of your controller, use the wrist strap and make sure your play area is free of people or objects," the company said.

Nintendo also said it "recommends players use the new Wii Remote Jacket as a cushiony shield, though the current Wii Remote is a safe product when used properly".

According to Japanese newspaper, Asahi Shimbun, Nintendo will spend over $17 million to produce the covers for Wii customers in the US, Europe and Japan.

Those who already own a Wii can request a Wii Remore Jacket for a free by filling out the online request form.
