Sony opens beta for PS3 Home virtual world

Online world open to all PlayStation 3 users

Sony has announced its making Home - its virtual world for Playstation 3 (PS3) users - available across the globe, following a number of delays.

PS3 users that have their console connected to a broadband connection can access now Home. Users will be able to download the software from the PlayStation Network section of the menu.

The virtual world allows users create their own avatars that are a cross between Mii's found on the Nintendo Wii and the characters in Second Life. The avatars can interact through voice and text chat in virtual environments for different Playsation 3 games, so they can swap tips, talk strategy and even get additional content and clues.

Sony's Home was first unveiled in 2007 but has been pushed back on several occasions to allow Sony to 'refine' the service.

"We are committed to providing PS3 users with exciting gaming experiences with PlayStation Home and together with our partners and users, expand the new world of interactive entertainment as we move forward," said Kaz Hirai, president and CEO of Sony's gaming unit.

Sony also confirmed that content with very in different regions. For example in North America virtual environments will be launched for the Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Far Cry 2, Warhawk Resistance and Guitar Hero.

However, in Europe the environments will start with Far Cry 2 and be joined soon by those for Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Warhawk Resistance, Motorstorm and SOCOM.
