Playstation 3 game contains Koran references

Sony says its will remove phrases from LittleBigPlanet

Sony has begun a worldwide recall of Playstation 3 game LittleBigPlanet as it contains at least two references to the holy Islamic text, the Koran, and the company fears it may cause offence to Muslims.

"During the review process prior to the release of LittleBigPlanet, it has been brought to our attention that one of the background music tracks licensed from a record label for use in the game contains two expressions that can be found in the Koran," Sony said in statement.

"We have taken immediate action to rectify this, and we sincerely apologise for any offense that this may have caused."

The sensitive phrases are allegedly in the first 30 seconds of a track by Mali-born singer Toumani Diabaté, which is the background music to the Swinging Safari level.

"Whilst shorter expressions from the Koran are sometimes used in Nasheeds, we are aware that the mixing of musical instruments with recognisable extracts from the Koran is offensive to Muslims. Therefore, we have taken immediate action to rectify this. We will confirm a new launch date shortly," Sony said on a Playstation forum.

Sony says it will begin shipping the revised game in US from October 27. No date has been given for a UK release yet.

This isn't the first time a game has been recalled for referencing the Koran. In 2003, Kakuto Chojin for Xbox was pulled from retail for containing holy Islamic text. It was later re-released with the offending content removed.
