Nintendo Wii to overtake Xbox 360

Console war as Nintendo targets Microsoft

Global Nintendo Wii unit sales are less than 1 million away from total Xbox 360 worldwide sales of 10 million, according to recent estimates. At its current rate, the Wii could surpass Xbox 360 sales as soon as September.

By comparison, the Wii has sold 9.3 million units worldwide, while the PS3 has shipped 3.8 million units. Assuming Nintendo’s Wii maintains its popularity in the coming months, it could easily overtake global Xbox 360 sales before the end of the year.

The console war will only likely heat up when both Microsoft and Nintendo release several high profile games this fall. Notable games for Xbox 360 include Halo 3, GTA 4, Mass Effect, Bioshock, and Assassins Creed while Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy, and Super Smash Bros Brawl will grace the Wii.
