Display specialist Microvision is demonstrating a mini projector for iPhones and iPods at CES and is planning to launch the product in the UK later this year.

The ShowWX is described as the world's first laser pico projector, with the laser technology providing a unique viewing experience, according to Microvision representatives.

"By using lasers as the light source we guarantee better focus than other display technologies and the colours are more vibrant," said a Microvision spokesperson at the CES Unveiled press preview event on Tuesday evening.

Slightly larger than an iPhone, the ShowWX is designed for business users and multimedia enthusiasts who want to watch or view content held on their iPod or iPhone on a larger screen when on the move. Consumers might want to use the product to show off photos taken on their iPhone to friends and family, for instance.

The mini projector can project a widescreen, WVGA (848 X 480 pixels), 'DVD-quality' image onto virtually any surface, the company claims, with image sizes reaching 100in in darkened rooms.

Although a US company, Microvision first launched the ShowWX in Spain, where the product is available from $500 (£315). The company plans to launch the product in the US in March, and hopes to find a distributor for a UK release later this year.
