Among the claimed improvements in the Amazon Kindle 3 are an enhanced display, faster navigation, and an entirely redesigned chassis.

The new Kindle also weighs less than its predecessor. Amazon says it's 15 percent lighter and 21 percent smaller than the second generation model.

Amazon claims to have the biggest selection of any e-bookstore in the UK; you can shop for more than 400,000 books, including bestsellers and new releases.

Although it's physically smaller than its predecessor, the new model still holds 3,500 books. A single charge lasts up to one month with wireless off, Amazon claims.

Amazon maintains that, with no need for a backlight, the Kindle's screen is easier on the eye than displays on tablet PCs. The Kindle's screen reflects light like ordinary paper, which means it's easy to read in bright sunlight.

Many people regard the Kindle as the perfect holiday gadget, but those wanting to take the new model with them on their 2010 summer getaway are likely to be disappointed. While Amazon is taking pre-orders now, the Kindle 3 won't be released until August 27.
