Robocup attracts cyber-Beckhams

Engineers attend robot football games

Over 300 teams from all over the globe arrived at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta yesterday to take part in the Robocup Awards. The week-long event attracts robotics engineers from around the world and aims to promote the development of artificial intelligence and robotics.

The RoboCup, which has not been held in the US since 2001, chose to use football as a central topic of research. Events include robot football for two-legged and four-legged machines and a competition for microscopic robots.

The ultimate goal of the project is to develop a team of fully autonomous humanoid robots that can win against the human world champion team in soccer by 2050.

For a robot team to perform in a football game, technologies such as design principles of autonomous agents, multi-agent collaboration and real-time reasoning must be incorporated.
