We were able to get a hands-on with a prototype of the G Watch at LG's showcase event at Mercedes-Benz World in Weybridge. The firm made the announcement while showing off its 2014 line up of home entertainment gadgets and appliances.

The G Watch was still in development at the time, so we were only able to look at the design of the prototype device. It uses only touch input so there are no physical buttons. It does have a built-in mic so you can say "Ok Google" then speak commands or ask questions.

It's somewhat similar to Sony's SmartWatch 2 with its square design but there's almost no details so it looks rather stealthy. Underneath are a set of metal contacts for charging. It's also nice to see the deliberate use of a standard strap size so you can use whatever strap you like. See also: Samsung Gear 2 Neo review.

LG G Watch: Specs and features

The LG G Watch it is available in two different colours: 'Black Titan' and 'White Gold'. It sports a 1.65in IPS LCD display and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor with 1.2GHz CPU. Like the Samsung Gear Live, it has 4GB built-in memory and 512MB RAM.

Like the Samsung Gear 2, it is dust and water resistant so you can get it wet on a run without worrying. Also similar to the Gear 2, the G Watch has a set of metal contacts on the rear with which to charge it, instead of fitting a bulky microUSB port onto it.

The G Watch uses a standard strap size so if you don't like the one it's supplied with, you can swap it for your own choice.

LG G Watch waterproof

Its screen will be always-on so you don't need to hit a button or twist your wrist to get some information such as the time (we'll have to see how that affects battery life).

Talking of battery, the LG G Watch has a 400mAh battery built-in, which LG says will last the whole day on a single charge.

Voice activation is built-in to Android Wear so users will be able to use the 'Ok Google' command which is currently available on some Android smartphones and Google Glass. In Google Now style, the G Watch will give you useful information like a reminder for a meeting or how long it will take to get home.
