Amazon Kindle in UK by Christmas

Report: Online retailer closing in on deal

The Amazon Kindle ebook reader could be available in the UK in time for Christmas, according to reports.

Mobile reports that Amazon is in discussions with a UK mobile operator, and says telecom specialist Qualcomm has been signed up to deal with all aspects of manufacturing the Kindle for the UK market.

Amazon Kindle DXAgreements with book publishers to make eBook titles available to a UK audience have already been secured, according to the report, while Amazon is said to be in discussions with newspaper and magazine publishers over digital reproduction rights.

However, tie-ups with Vodafone and Orange have stalled as the two operators are working on their own branded e-book readers in Germany and France, according to Cellular News.

Amazon has so far refused to comment on the rumours. A spokesman for the company said: "We have previously announced that we are looking to release the Kindle with our international customers. At the moment we have no timeline."

Amazon's most recent Kindle - the DX - is significantly bigger than the original and is designed for larger-format periodicals such as newspapers and magazines, among other things. The product is only available in the US at the moment.
