Video: Amazon's new Kindle eBook reader

Kindle 2 is thinner and faster

Amazon unveiled an updated version of its Kindle wireless e-reader yesterday that boasts a new design, updated display and more storage among other features.

Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos showed off the Kindle 2 at a New York press conference. The device has a 6in, 600 x 800 pixel display that provides 16 shades of gray, an upgrade from its predecessor that only displayed 4. The company claims that pages refresh 20 percent faster in the new version of the device.

The new model is about a third of an inch thick and comes with 2 gigs of internal memory. It can hold more than 1,500 books, almost 8 times that of the first Kindle which launched in November 2007. The new Kindle has 25 percent longer battery life and an experimental text-to-speech function that allows users to listen to books. At the press conference in New York, attendees got the chance to listen-listen to Stephen King read to them live.
