Netflix gives away $100,000 in cloud developer challenge

Company hopes to "lay railway lines for cloud adoption and usage"

TV on-demand company Netflix is giving away $100,000 to developers who can "improve the cloud for everyone".

The Netflix Cloud Prize is challenging developers around the world to do their best to improve the features, usability, quality, reliability and security of computing resources delivered as a service over the internet.

Contest submissions will be judged by a panel of experts and all submissions will be freely available to anyone.Neil Hunt, chief product officer at Netflix, said, "No doubt many of the key ideas that will take the cloud to the next level have yet to be conceived, explored and developed, which is what the competition is all about."

Netflix says that as it migrated to a general purpose cloud platform, its engineers created technologies that have since been shared freely with the general public as open source software.

"We're laying railway lines for cloud adoption and usage," said Hunt. "The Netflix Cloud Prize is designed to improve understanding of what it takes to build native applications for the cloud, that take full advantage of the opportunities for scalable computing."

The Netflix Cloud Prize is divided into 10 categories that offer a $10,000 prize each. They will be judged by a panel that includes Amazon.com chief technology officer Werner Vogels, Thoughtworks chief scientist Martin Fowler, Telx senior vice president and author of "Cloudonomics" Joe Weinman, University of Aarhus developer training expert Aino Corry, and Netflix cloud vice president Yury Izrailevsky.

Entries have to be in by 15 September 2013 and the winners will be announced in October. Prizes will be presented at November's Amazon Web Services (AWS) Re:Invent conference in Las Vegas, where winners will be guests of Netflix.
