Vic Government plays matchmaker for students and businesses

The Victorian Government has launched a Technology Student Accelerator Voucher initiative which intends to make small and medium-sized companies more competitive locally and globally by matching them with students studying ICT at university.

The initiative is one component of the three that make up the Government's $8 million Technology Voucher program, which was developed to drive the use of cutting-edge technology and support Victorian companies.

In addition to pairing, nine SMEs received vouchers worth up to $10,000 to develop ICT solutions. The companies include: Scientific Technology, Ad Hoc Software, Senath, English Online, Adilam Technologies, Evado, Lexer, Billcap, and b2cloud.

RMIT University, Swinburne University of Technology, University of Ballarat, and University of Melbourne will partner with these businesses in the first round of the program.

"The vouchers give Victorian SMEs access to the relevant technology skills and expertise needed to develop innovative products," Technology Minister, Gordon Rich-Phillips, said. "ICT university students and academics from Victorian universities will collaborate with these companies to deliver tangible and practical ICT solutions."

Students will be putting their learning into practice through projects ranging from the development of real-time digital content delivery mechanisms for mass communication, to testing of frequencies for bulk reading of radio frequency identification (RFID) tags.
