Intellect demands improved government leadership in technology sector

Government urged to 'fast track' essential infrastructure projects in order to boost business confidence

IT industry organisation Intellect has made 10 recommendations to Chancellor George Osborne ahead of tomorrow's Autumn Statement.

Julian David, director general of Intellect, has urged the government to "fast track" essential infrastructure projects in order to boost business confidence.

David said: "The technology sector is seeking a coherent, clear and decisive plan for delivery that will unlock investment from a technology industry looking for greater levels of leadership from the government."

He said: "It's certain that to get back to growth, the UK must make efforts to have the most connected, most secure economy in the world. Getting to that point will rely on a healthy and vibrant relationship between government and the technology industry."

Intellect has recommended that the government:

Abandon the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) and implement a Climate Change Agreement (CCA) for data centres.Maintain focus on boosting domestic skills but ensure the UK remains open to the best global talent.Extend the Patent Box to include services. The energy bill must provide certainty on Britain's energy future.Prioritise innovation and use proceeds of 4G auction to invest in innovation.Enable flexibility in research and development (R&D) tax credits.Support investment in high speed broadband and its economic benefits.Commission an independent evaluation of the capabilities of the UK's major banks' technology infrastructure customers.Build momentum of public sector procurement reform and unleash transformative power of technology.Establish a UK Tech Council.
