Government Digital Service on talent hunt

Calling all technical architects, developers and designers

The government has announced a recruitment drive for new developers, designers and web operations staff to help transform its digital services.

"We need digital talent all across government. In policy, legal, procurement and service delivery, deep digital experience in government is scarce. So I would recommend that we see this drive not just a one-off recruitment campaign for GDS (Government Digital Services), but the start of the digital transformation of all government services," said Mike Bracken, executive director of digital in the Cabinet Office.

According to the civil service recruitment website, a range of jobs are currently available, including technical architect, developer, delivery team manager, interaction designer and web ops. There is also a vacancy for a deputy director of digital engagement.

The salaries on offer range from up to £59,000 for the operational delivery role to a maximum £117,800 for the deputy director of digital engagement.

Bracken also said that the government will be adopting more open source technologies and cloud computing for its new digital platform.

"Over the last 15 years or more, across government we have engineered digital products and services using risk aversion and long-term programme management as our guiding principles.

"Now that it is clear that rapid, user-led development using open source technologies, agile approaches to delivery and cloud-based infrastructure is the order of the day, we find ourselves badly in need of the talent to engineer ourselves out of our torpor," he said.
