Guardian.co.uk appoints new head

Georgina Henry takes over from Janine Gibson, who is moving to lead New York digital operations

Guardian News & Media has appointed Georgina Henry as head of the newspaper's UK digital operation.

Henry, currently the head of culture at the Guardian and Observer, will be responsible for all aspects of the website, except news. This includes the organisation's mobile and multimedia activity.

She takes over from Janine Gibson, who has moved to New York lead the Guardian's new digital operation in the US.

Henry joined the Guardian 22 years ago as a media correspondent. Since then, she has held roles including editor of MediaGuardian, and deputy editor of the Guardian between 1996 and 2006, when she launched the Comment is Free section of the website.

Last month, the newspaper group revealed that it would be focusing on a 'digital first' strategy after it reported £33 million losses in cash last year.
