More than one million Freeview TVs and set-top boxes that can receive HD channels have been sold.

According to the TV service, 642,000 homes in the UK have hardware that allows them to access Freeview's HD service, which was launched nine months ago.

Freeview also revealed that the surge in HDTV sales over the festive period helped ensure the 1.2 million Freeview HD device mark was hit so quickly.

The TV service hopes that by the end of next year, 98.5 percent of the UK will be able to receive Freeview HD.

"Reaching this milestone within the first year of launching Freeview HD is a great achievement," said Freeview managing director Ilse Howling.

"We know from talking to Freeview viewers that having high definition is becoming the standard when considering what type of equipment to buy. As Freeview HD continues to roll out to new areas of the UK this year, it's exciting that Freeview can meet this need by offering quality HD channels without a subscription."
