Toshiba sees disappointing HD DVD sales

Company nearly halves sales target

Toshiba has reduced its target for HD DVD player shipments in Northern America following low sales.

Toshiba had originally expected to sell 1.8 million players to the US and Canada by the end of this year. This number has now been scaled back to 1 million.

No reason has been given for the poor sales but the cut back is likely to also be seen in regions other than Northern America.

Toshiba hopes the new RD-A600 and RD-A600 players will boost sales, at least in Japan. The two new digital video recorders will have recording capability onto their 600GB and 300GB hard drives respectively and HD-DVD playback and recording.
