IBM tech powers Culturecom's entertainment venture

Some of the most popular Hong Kong-created comic characters like Chinese Hero will be enlivened with a tech touch.

Hong Kong-listed comics publisher Culturecom will power its gaming and entertainment platform Ucan.com with IBM technologies--including pre-integrated infrastructure system PureFlex, ongoing management and operation service from Big Blue's tier 4 data center in Suzhou, and other tools, said Culturecom Wednesday.

"Ucan.com--to be launched in June--is developed following the trends and characteristics of 'Hong Kong style' comics," said Donald Kwan, culturecom's managing director. "A smarter online city created with augmented reality technology, Ucan.com is a virtual-reality lifestyle, entertainment, and culture platform where users can interact. With support from our founding shareholder Jay Chou and our own abundant comic resources, we expect to attract millions of Ucan fans in greater China."

Big Blue said it has completed the implementation of PureFlex, WebSphere Application Server, and IBM smarter commerce offering Sterling -- these systems will be live in June for the rollout of Ucan.com.

In the second half of 2013, the vendor will implement Cognos BI and SPSS -- expected to go live by year-end -- to allow Culturecom to understand social sentiments and provide 'hyper personalized services' to customers, IBM added.

"Marketing pros talked about segments, but today we need offerings that meet individual needs--and thus hyper personalized services," said Ernest Lee, director, Smarter Planet Solutions, IBM Greater China Group. "These are only doable with big-data technology and analytics."

Culturecom said it will also launch music app Ucan.Sing, apps related to The Voice of China -- a popular singing performance program in China -- in June as well as the UcaneCommerce platform by end-December.
