Films and TV show pick up four gongs apiece at the Visual Effects Society's annual bash.
The Visual Effects Society has announced the winners of The 11th Annual VES Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, giving gongs to outstanding visual effects in 24 categories of film, animation, television, commercials and video games.
Life of Pi and Brave were the evening's most honored feature films, with four awards each.
Life of Pi won in categories including for VFX in a VFX-heavy film, animated characters, simulations and compositing. The troubled Rhythm & Hues was the lead VFX house for the film and the character award was for its work on the tiger Richard Parker. The simulation award was specifically for the 'Storm of God' sequence created by MPC (you can read our interview with MPC's VFX supervisor on the film, Guillaume Rocheron about the project here). Life of Pi's director Ang Lee was also given the VES Visionary Award. Harrison Ford presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to Richard Edlund, best known for his groundbreaking work on the original Star Wars trilogy.
Pixar was awarded for Brave's CG animation, characters, environments and simulations.
Pixomondo's VFX for the second series of HBO's TV show Game of Thrones - currently showing on Sky in the UK - garnered gongs include two specifically for the final episode, Valar Morghulis - including the White Walker army and 'Training the Dragons' sequence.
The Student award went to the much-feted Natalis by students from the Filmakademie Baden-Wrttemberg.
